April 20, 2020
Dear SWSM Families,
What my heart has known, Governor Pritzker put into words yesterday when he declared the academic school year over. No other choice could have been made to ensure the health and safety of all due to this pandemic. Please know that our DOJO learning will continue for the children through the term’s end on May 29, 2020. When school resumes in the fall, I know everyone will be excited to get back to class!
It is terribly sad to walk through school and see everything in place as it was left on March 13th just waiting for the children to return. Certainly we are missing the culmination of all of the children’s hard work this year. The end of the year activities are some of the most important and fun things to do, and it is sad to think they will not happen. We won’t be hosting Mothers’ Tea. The kindergarten trip to Chicago Symphony has been cancelled as have the toddlers proposed trip to the farm, the Little Mermaid preschool/kindergarten field trip, end of the year parties and, of course, Graduation 2020. Most importantly, the children will be missing friends and teachers, not to mention how much we will miss all of you. So many milestones unable to occur.
We are the sum total of the blessings and bruises of this life. So while we are not the same, we can be better. We can have a new appreciation for the people we love. We can find gratitude for the simple joys we’ve forgotten were so readily available. We can have a greater compassion for the pain of people around us. We can aspire to live more intentionally, given that we recognize how fragile life is. I’m not sure normal is an option; but if we do this right, we’ll embrace the new (ab)normal together.
With warm regards,
